The Kansas Association of Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages and Bilingual Educators (KATESOL/BE) mourns the loss of life at ports, beaches and islands in the Indian Ocean region on December 26, 2004. Natural disasters of these proportions are a reminder that many of our most urgent daily concerns, including disputes over cultural and political differences, are trivial and transitory by comparison. Our members are part of the global community which is shocked and deeply saddened by such extreme death and destruction. The cross-cultural nature of the ESOL and language teaching/learning profession makes all of us particularly sensitive to the human ties we share with the more than 100,000 victims in Australia, India, Indonesia, Kenya, Malaysia, the Maldives, Myanmar, Somalia, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, and Thailand, as well as tourists, teachers and others, including thousands of Americans, also missing and possibly killed. Our hearts go out to the survivors and to families and loved ones of those who perished or have suffered severe injury.

Please read and share these 10 Frequently Asked Questions on ELLs and ESOL, provided recently by Melanie Stuart, of KSDE.
